Taos Chainsaw Day Crew Member Position Description
Upper Rio Grande Office (Taos)
 
Rocky Mountain Youth Corps (RMYC) is a nonprofit youth development organization serving New Mexico. We inspire young adults to make a positive difference in themselves and their communities. Through training and service, Corpsmembers discover their potential for healthy, productive lives.
 
POSITION PURPOSE: 
Conservation Crews will work to safely complete conservation projects in their communities. Project work may include chainsaw work, trail work, fencing, invasive species removal, historic preservation, or other community improvement work. All Corpsmembers will receive both personal and professional development training such as First Aid/CPR, Mental Health First Aid, financial management, and public speaking skills. 
 
POSITION TYPE: Seasonal, full time, AmeriCorps member
SCHEDULE: Day work schedule. Day work schedule is Monday-Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm with weekends off. 
STIPEND: $620.00 (before taxes) per week.
REPORTS TO: Staff Crew Supervisor with support and additional oversight by Upper Rio Grande Summer Program Coordinator.
START/END DATE: June 2nd to August 1st (300 hour term) 
 
EDUCATION AWARD: $1,565.08 upon successful completion of 300 hour AmeriCorps Service Term
LOCATION: 
RMYC Taos Office: 1203 King Dr., Taos, NM, 87517 with project locations throughout the state. Participants must have reliable transportation to and from this location, according to their work schedule for the duration of the season. 
 
RESPONSIBILITIES:

Comply with all RMYC and AmeriCorps rules and policies and not participate in any prohibited activities as described in the member contract.

QUALIFICATIONS: 
<ul>
<li>
18 – 25 years of age as of June 2, 2025
</li>
<li>
Have a High School Diploma or equivalent or agree to obtain one prior to using the Segal Education Award
<ul>
<li>
If you are not capable of obtaining a High School diploma or equivalent or are enrolled in an institution of higher education on an ability to benefit basis you may be considered eligible for funds under section 484 of the Higher Education Act of 1965 (20 U.S.C. 1091)

Must be a New Mexico Resident

BENEFITS:

Healthcare coverage is available to all AmeriCorps members at no cost to the member. This is considered primary coverage and is not available as supplemental coverage.

1 Non-Scheduled Day (paid day off) is available during the length of the term of service (These days off ARE NOT counted toward the service hours required for the Educational Award)

RMYC observes all National holidays and are considered approved paid days off, however RMYC reserves the right to have AmeriCorps members work or service hours on certain holidays if necessary to meet program requirements (These days off ARE NOT counted toward the service hours required for the Educational Award)

Student loan forbearance and interest payments are available for those who qualify

EVALUATION:

POSITION PURPOSE: 
Supervisors oversee the day-to-day operations of crews of youth and young adults, and are integral to the fulfillment of RMYC’s mission. The Supervisor will manage a diverse crew of participants between the ages of 17 and 25 in the safe and efficient completion of conservation or outreach projects in the outdoors, while providing structured opportunities for personal and professional development throughout the season
 
POSITION TYPE: Seasonal, full time, Staff Member
SCHEDULE: Day work schedule will vary depending on the project site and project partner, but will be 40 hours per week. The specific schedule may be Monday-Friday, 8 hours per day, or Tuesday-Friday, 10 hours per day.
STIPEND: $17.50/hour (before taxes) paid biweekly. Overtime eligible.
REPORTS TO: Upper Rio Grande Individual Placement/Summer Program Coordinator
DATES: May 12th, 2025 to July 28th, 2024. 4 weeks of paid orientation training followed by
project work. (Actual dates may vary due to weather, COVID-19, or other conditions) 
LOCATION: This position is supervised out of the Upper Rio Grande RMYC Office in Taos, New Mexico.Our office is located at 1203 King Drive # 3. Participants must have reliable transportation according to their work schedule for the duration of the season.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: 
Essential Function: Crew Operations
<ul>
<li>
Directly mentor a crew of 7 AmeriCorps members in the completion of projects such as trail construction/maintenance, fencing, invasive species removal, and additional projects as assigned, meeting high standards of safety, quality and efficiency.
</li>
<li>
Provide on-the-job training and coaching to members to develop necessary project-related skills.
</li>
<li>
Manage difficult personnel challenges within small groups together for extended periods of time, in remote areas with limited communication and support channels.
</li>
<li>
Hold crew accountable to RMYC policy and code of conduct. Communicate any disciplinary needs to the Conservation Program Coordinator as needed.
</li>
</ul>
 
Essential Function: Risk Management
<ul>
<li>
Manage crew’s physical/emotional well-being and promote a culture of safety in all aspects of crew life.
</li>
<li>
Safely transport crew to/from project sites in an RMYC vehicle.
</li>
<li>
Respond to safety concerns with appropriate and timely decisions and action, keeping RMYC staff informed.
</li>
<li>
Be the primary point of contact in critical situations such as wildfires, medical emergencies, and other unanticipated crises.
</li>
<li>
Practice COVID-19 safe measures as indicated by Government Mandates and RMYC Protocol. 
</li>
</ul>
 
 
Essential Function: Crew Management/Corpsmember Development
<ul>

Maintain a healthy group dynamic by promoting inclusivity, communication, and conflict resolution.
</li>
<li>
Facilitate both formal and informal job, college readiness, and life skills training on an ongoing basis.
</li>
<li>
Serve as a professional role model, upholding RMYC policies and holding members accountable for actions.
</li>
<li>
Oversee a highly structured, participatory environment during project work
</li>
</ul>
 
Essential Function: Independent Leadership and Critical Thinking Skills. Leaders may spend the day in remote terrain with limited communication and support channels, with a crew of diverse experiences in the outdoors.
<ul>
<li>
Be adaptable. The nature of project work presents unique challenges that aren’t always anticipated, and which may require critical decisions to be made without immediate guidance and/or support from RMYC staff or agency partners.
</li>
<li>
Make informed decisions in the field to accommodate for changing weather conditions, gear malfunctions, and other unanticipated events.
</li>
<li>
Make informed safety and work decisions.
</li>
</ul>
 
Essential Function: Administrative Duties
<ul>
<li>
Prepare detailed, accurate weekly reports (timecards, project data, incident reports, job hazard analysis, etc.).
</li>
<li>
Inform RMYC staff and agency partners of important crew developments during formal and informal meetings/debriefs.
</li>
<li>
Purchase crew-related gas or supplies as needed, with a set budget, and properly document receipts/mileage.
</li>
</ul>
 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
<ul>
<li>
21 years of age as of May 12, 2024; valid, insurable driver’s license (without major citations).
</li>
<li>
US Citizen or Permanent Legal Resident
</li>
<li>
Able to complete entire Summer Season (May 12 to July 28th) 
</li>
<li>
Chainsaw experience preferred with preference going to candidates holding a current certification
</li>
<li>
Experience working with youth ages 17- 25, preferably in a leadership, mentoring or instructional capacity.
</li>
<li>
Ability to analyze projects with RMYC staff, determine capability of crew to accomplish work assignments and best work methods, appropriate tools, safety methods, and materials.
</li>
<li>
Experience with building a positive group dynamic; confidence in working with diverse and challenging populations.
</li>
<li>
Excellent public speaking skills to conduct training sessions and facilitate group discussions.
</li>
<li>
Good attention to detail and ability to write accurate, thorough correspondence and reports.
</li>
<li>
Wilderness First Aid (WFA) or WFA certification within 90 days of hire (WFA provided during orientation).
</li>
</ul>
 
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
<ul>
<li>
Two or more seasons of experience with outdoor conservation projects. 
</li>
<li>
Experience with applying Leave No Trace principles.
</li>
<li>
Two or four-year degree in natural resources, outdoor education, teaching, or related field. 
</li>
<li>
Proficient driving in 4WD conditions and maneuvering with trailers.
</li>
</ul>
